Analyzing air pollution in India: Causes, impacts, government policies and challenges

Author(s): Sumit Kumar Mavi

Abstract: Air pollution in India is a major public health issue that has a negative impact on the health of millions of people. Rapid industrialization, urbanization, and an increasing reliance on fossil fuels have resulted in exceptionally high levels of particulate matter (PM2.5), Sulfur Dioxide (SO₂) and Nitrigen Dioxide (NO₂). The World Health Organization claims that, a number of Indian cities are among the most polluted in the world, which has serious negative effects on health, including neurological disorders, cardiovascular and respiratory ailments, and early mortality. In addition to endangering human health, air pollution damages ecosystems by reducing biodiversity, acidifying soil, and damaging agriculture. Furthermore, because air pollution releases aerosols and greenhouse gases that alter global weather patterns, it plays a major role in climate change. Poor air quality puts vulnerable groups at disproportionate risk, especially the aged and children. Furthermore, air pollution exacerbates already-existing socioeconomic inequality by influencing productivity and healthcare costs. This study looks at the sources and effects of air pollution in India, emphasizing the urgent need for robust legislative measures and public awareness initiatives to address this significant issue and improve air quality across the country. Reducing the detrimental effects of air pollution on human health, the environment, and economies requires effective mitigation techniques. These include emission controls, cleaner technologies, and legislative actions.
