Abstract: Urban areas in India are well positioned to attract migration because the economy is booming and developing. But the gender gap in migration is evident as per data from the taken 3 additional rounds of the Indian National Sample Survey and this study aims to examine the gender component of migration in urban India. The study was conducted based on bivariate and multivariate statistics. According to this, men migrate less frequently than women. In metropolitan areas, the proportion of non-working female migrants has increased throughout 1999-2000, 2007-2008 and 2020-21 as per secondary data and reports available in NSSO Migration and Periodic Labour Force Survey data published time to time. A well-structured purposive random sampling with a large dataset guided our analysis. Also, we have taken a minimum of six months stay in a urban area from Usual place of Residence (UPR) to consider as migrant (NSSO, 2020-21). The proportion of working women declines when migrant women's number is counted in professional parameter with that of migrant men. We can say that there is a defeminizing attitude or changes in the society. Marriage is of course considered as most of the causes but, high affluence, improved literacy rates, and social standing are other factors that promote non-working female migration in urban India.
