Effect of sand stone percent in row material of fair bricks production on the compressive strength

Abstract: Bricks are one of the most important building materials that have played a major role in the global urban renaissance, especially in Iraq, where recent decades have witnessed an increasing demand for improving the quality of bricks to keep pace with harsh climatic conditions that include high temperatures in the summer and extreme cold in the winter. However, the brick industry in some areas suffers from technical problems that affect the quality of the product, most notably the problem of verification resulting from the high proportions of sand in the raw materials, according to soil tests.
In light of these challenges, the current study aims to reduce the proportion of sand in manufactured bricks and study the effect of this on the compressive strength and other mechanical properties of bricks, including longitudinal and volumetric shrinkage, water absorption rate, and efflorescence. It also seeks to determine the optimal proportion of sand and thermal manufacturing conditions to achieve bricks with better specifications in terms of performance and durability.
The results of the study showed that reducing the proportion of sand to 15% and 10%, with the adoption of a firing temperature of 950 °C, provides improved mechanical properties for bricks, which contributes to enhancing their resistance to harsh climatic factors. These results provide a practical guide for developing the brick industry locally, with the potential for wider scale to improve production efficiency.
