Purpose of waste in recycling: A Kantian approach to environmentalism

Author(s): Aditi Singh

Abstract: This paper is an attempt at understanding recycling as an effect of waste within the philosophical confines of being a solution to waste handling. Waste finds its purpose or usage in recycling, wherein, lies its significance. The significance finds close affinity to the concept of purpose with its obvious meaning being the psychological sense and the course of action behind the execution of recycling. The paper reflects on the concept of desire being the primary motivating factor behind an efficient human action such as recycling. This notion is strengthened in the paper by Kant’s morality. The paper ends by establishing the claims of feelings of pleasure and aversion behind the commitment to recycling which finds close relevance in Kant’s aesthetics.
