Pollution and contamination in the Gomati River along the Lucknow area: A critical review
Author(s): Fatima Zareen
Abstract: The Gomati,a groundwater-fed tributary of the Ganga River, originating from Gomath Tal, near MadhoTanda village in Puranpur tehsil, Pilibhit District, Uttar Pradesh which is now witnessing alarming levels of pollution in its Lucknow area due to rising anthropogenic pressures. This critical review synthesizes recent experimental studies and model-based assessments to evaluate the physico-chemical and biological degradation of the river’s water quality. Employing multivariate analyses, fuzzy soft set theory, and hydrological simulation models, this paper investigates the regional and temporal patterns of pollution, identifies the dominant sources, and evaluates the efficacy of existing mitigation strategies. The findings underscore the inadequacy of current technical interventions, advocating for an integrative, adaptive, and community-oriented approach to restore the river’s ecological health.
